Kelp farming for food, fertilizer, fuel and cleaning up pollution.

Francesca Rheannon talks with Dr. Chris Gobler of the School of Marine and Atmospheric Science at Stony Brook University and fisherman Sean Barrett of Dock to Dish, a community-supported fishery.  They talk about the promise of kelp farming in local bays for use as food, fertilizer, fuel and cleaning up pollution. Also we noted kelp's ability to reduce ocean acidification and provide habitat, thereby improving conditions for our region's shell fishing industry.  Here is our conversation: Here is some more information about kelp farming: East End Beacon https://www.eastendbeacon.com/kelp-farmers-get-a-big-surprise/           https://www.eastendbeacon.com/drawdown-on-east-end-kelp-farming/ BBC The miraculous power of seaweed on kelp in Australia -    kelp forests dissapering as temp. rises and growing seaweed alongside mussels  https://www.bbc.com/reel/playlist/future-planet?vpid=p09bxb6f

New York's Climate Leadership and Protection Act -- How Farms can Help fight Climate Change

Today we present a portion of a forum on implementing New York’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act The forum focused on how the protection and management of New York’s natural resources can help reach the goal of net zero greenhouse gas emissions statewide by 2050. It was produced at Columbia University’s Sabin Center for Climate Change Law and presented via Zoom on January 14. The forum focused on two areas:  How protecting nature helps with climate change mitigation and adaptation    and                                                                                   How New York farms can help fight climate change through techniques including carbon sequestration and anaerobic digestors for organic waste .    Listen here for a portion of the forum A video of the complete forum is available at  https://www.youtube.com/user/NYLCV/videos
